General market summary for my designer card greeting cards
Birthday Bliss birthday cards are feminine design led. Greeting cards research suggests that more and more female customers are taking the time to buy greeting cards whether it is for male for female occasions. This suggests that the trend should be more targeted towards this area.
Again we believe that the market for the higher range greeting cards should be maintained and that more and more competitors are moving towards this trend. For example fully hand finished cards are selling at a premium at the moment, however the medium for selling is still key whether it is online or in the shops. It is questionable whether or not these types of cards are really profitable as you aren’t producing them in batches. Further more they also take a very long time to make each card and whether the prices justifies this is another story in this current climate.
However hand finished ranges such as Birthday Bliss and Lovely Lace have been specially made so that they attract the right kind of customer, ie from the description above. The idea of these types of cards is that when a customer picks up the card they can immediately feel the quality of the card itself which will help them decide even more to choose that card. Further more due to additional embellishments on the card such as Swaroski crystals, hand finished crystal glitter, shiny foil, and embossing. All these additional value added items would firstly enable the card to stand out and further more and value in the eyes of the customer when they pick up the card. Also as another tactic you can add different colored envelopes such as shiny pearl ones which add more wow factor to it!
However the other side of the story is the actual selling of the product to retail rather than direct to customer which you can also do. One of the most difficult tasks facing us today is selling the new products in the high streets stores. As all these big stores are dominating the high street it is very difficult for us small businesses to try and compete in this tough trading environment given that we will get muscled out very quickly. Even though the product is fantastic, the art is in the selling and trying to get into these bigger greeting card stores. If anyone can help in this field I would be most grateful!
The other most difficult part is that designs and fashion is always changing and there is a real high risk that designs printed would go out of fashion pretty quickly. Therefore it is imperative that you only print the minimum amount required or even better purchase a digital printing press! Currently on the market there are very competitive prices for second hand version of these.
There are also Art ranges which are plain and simple oil and water colour paintings printed onto card. These are aimed at the higher age groups as research has suggested they prefer the old style. On average the market place is currently pricing greeting cards in the £1 to £2.99 range.
